How To Stay Healthy During The Holiday Season

Holiday and weight loss generally don’t go hand in hand. It can be very difficult to maintain your goals, while surrounded by food, family, and stress. Here our some ways we maintain our goals while still enjoying the best this season has to offer.

Avoid overeating! Let’s face it, most activities this time of year revolve around food. It’s hard to avoid. This can make weight loss very difficult this time of year but we have some ways to avoid the unwanted weight gain.

  1. Enjoy in moderation! If you are having big meals limit them to only once a week.
  2. Don’t overfill your plate. Continues with the moderation theme, but you can enjoy good food without overeating by limiting how much of each item you are enjoying.
  3. Take your time, put down your silverware after each bite. Being intentional with each bite will allow your body to digest and let you know when you are full. Once your body hits full, stop eating!

Snack wisely. We know it can be hard to decline a delicious looking holiday cookie or cake. Avoid temptation by caring healthy snacks with you.

Take time every day to be active. It gets said over and over again, but it really is very important to make sure you are spending at least 30 minutes a day being active.

  1. Wake up and go for a walk.
  2. Spend 30 minutes in the gym after work.
  3. Do at-home workouts while your watching TV at night.

Stay hydrated. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water! If possible, drink more than you normally would. Between the specialty coffee drinks, hot chocolates, mulled wine, and eggnogs your body is desperately seeking water.

Tip: Carry a 32 ounce water bottle with you and have a set goal for each hour.

Beat germs. This is flu and cold season so combat it by being prepared.

  1. Get the flu shot.
  2. Wash your hands! You’re busy and running around so it’s more important than ever to make sure you are keeping your hands clean and away from your face.
  3. Keep your electronics clean! Your phone spends a lot of time in your hands and up close and personal with your face. Keep them sanitized.

Rest! It’s easy when you are running around all day, stressed, for your body to become fatigued. This will lead to an onslaught of health problems, so kick up your heels!
