Healthy Fitmas tips to accelerate your weight loss this holiday season:

1. Know your numbers.

Go into the holidays knowing your basic numbers like your weight, BMI, and glucose levels. This will give a baseline and allow you to create a strategy for your holiday eating.

2. Stick to your morning routine.

The holidays pull you out of your normal routine and can be complete chaos. The best way to tackle this is the stick to your morning routine every day. A quote from William McRaven from Make Your Bed says it best:

“If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. . . . And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made – that you made – and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”
William H. McRaven- Make Your Bed

3. Have a healthy breakfast every day.

This goes along with sticking to a morning routine, having a healthy breakfast will get your day started on the right foot. By having a healthy breakfast you are more likely to make better eating choices throughout the day. It will also give you the energy to tackle what the day has in store.

4. Lose the liquid calories.

Make this a successful Fitmas and ditch the liquid calories. Unnecessary liquid calories kill diets.

5. Drink your H2O

Water is the wonder drug, especially for weight loss. It flushes bad toxins and keeps you full, while also eliminating cravings. Best practice: keep a metal reusable bottle with you at all times. Better for the environment and it guarantees you have no excuses to not drink water.

6. Try a mini-fast.

If you find yourself overindulging, it could be beneficial to try a mini-fast. Take a day or two and eat only fruits, vegetables, and broths. This will allow your body to realign and give it a break from the endless amounts of sugar and heavy winter foods.

7. Be guilt free.

It’s okay if you aren’t on top of your diet 100% of the time. Try following the 80-20 rule, 80% of the time you make good eating decisions and you allow yourself one snack a day or one cheat day a week. If you allow yourself the 20% you won’t feel you are missing out and overindulge later.

8. Take “me time”

Self care is really important, especially during the holidays. When your stress levels increase it causes the stress hormones to elevate, which crush sleep hormones. This in turn increases appetites, and creates cravings for certain foods like carbohydrates. For ideas on how to beat the holiday stress check out our Self Care blog.

9. Satisfy your need to move.

Take at least 30 minutes a day to move your body! We are not meant to be stagnant all day. 30 minutes of simple activity will help you stay focused throughout the day, as well as help with your weight loss goals.

10. Sleep more.

When our bodies don’t get the necessary amount of sleep, that’s when our cravings for junk food start to rise. Allow yourself the proper amount of sleep and see how much your cravings go down and your focus and energy go up.

11. Party with a purpose.

What this means is don’t go to a party without a strategy. Make sure you eat ahead of time so you don’t fall victim to the snack table, and have an idea of what drink you will order. If you are at a dinner party, figure out what the healthiest option is and do your best to not overeat. Be cognisant of all your choices and what you are putting into your body!

12. Get the family involved.

Healthy eating and being active isn’t just for weight loss! Get the whole family involved in making better eating choices and taking time every day to be active, go for a walk, play outside, or even do little home workouts together. Anything to get your body moving together.
